Light Orange Underwing

The Light Orange Underwing is a very local but often common where it occurs. It is one of the earliest day-flying moths to emerge with adults on the wing slightly later than the very similar Orange Underwing. It is usually seen in bright sunshine from late March to early May. It is often seen basking on the ground and taking nutrients from muddy paths following an April shower.

The Light Orange Underwing is restricted to woodlands containing Aspen (Populus tremula). It can be found at Wappenbury Wood and Oversley Wood and several other localities in the county.
